Patch No. 01
Untitled” is one of my proudest works—a track built from five custom-designed synthesizers that interact and respond to each other in a shared modular environment. The piece blends melodic techno elements with subtle tech-house-inspired rhythmic structures, creating a soundscape that evolves continuously without repeating itself.
Each synthesizer was built from the ground up during my Computer Music Synthesis course, where I explored multiple synthesis philosophies:
• Additive – layered harmonic construction
• Subtractive – shaping tone through dynamic filtering
• Amplitude Modulation (AM) – creating shifting timbral motion
• Ring Modulation (RM) – generating metallic resonance and instability
• Frequency Modulation (FM) – producing harmonically rich, evolving textures
Rather than functioning as isolated voices, the synths were engineered to interact, affecting each other’s dynamics and spectral behavior. This approach allowed me to create a cohesive sonic ecosystem where harmonic tension, decay, and movement emerge organically from the design of the instruments themselves.
This piece reflects my direction as a sound designer, building tools, not just tracks,and exploring how synthesis techniques transform when they’re allowed to collide inside a system I designed.
Patch No. 04
This track combines Hard House aggression with Witch House tonality, powered by four original sound engines—three built in Native Instruments Reaktor and one wavetable synth.
The sound design is structured around:
• Additive Synth Layer – building harmonic density
• Subtractive Main Synth – shaping the core melodic line
• Modified Additive Engine – introducing unstable, shifting overtones
• Wavetable Element – adding spectral movement and digital texture
These layers interact to form a cohesive tonal system rather than functioning as isolated synths.
To support the intensity of the lead sound, I constructed the rhythm using layered drum loops, transient-shaped samples, and a kick structure that doubles during the drop—creating a high-pressure, high-impact moment characteristic of Hard House.
This piece highlights how contrasting synthesis methods can be used to engineer both harmonic color and rhythmic force inside a single track.
Patch No. 02
This track draws inspiration from Hard House and Kettama, and is driven by three custom-built Reaktor 6 sound engines centered on amplitude modulation. Each synthesizer implements AM in a distinct way: one through a strict modulation architecture, another through additive harmonic construction shaped by modulation depth, and a third through a hybrid topology that blends additive partials with AM-derived sideband generation.
Together, these engines produce the warped, granular-like distortion and gritty spectral motion that define the melodic line. The interaction between modulation indices, carrier–modulator relationships, and harmonic interference results in constantly shifting overtones and controlled spectral instability—elements that give the track its aggressive tonal identity.
The percussion was designed using layered drum loops, transient-sculpted hits, and syncopated rhythmic structures to reinforce the forward momentum typical of Hard House. Strategic kick doubling in peak sections increases low-frequency energy and transient density, creating a more forceful and high-impact rhythmic frame.
Overall, the piece demonstrates how AM-based synthesis systems can be engineered to shape both spectral aggression and rhythmic propulsion within a single cohesive composition.
Patch No. 03
This track is inspired by Hard House and the production style of Kettama, and is built around three custom-designed sound engines developed in Reaktor 6. While all three patches are rooted in amplitude modulation, each synthesizer implements the technique through a different synthesis framework—one using a strict AM topology, one generating harmonics through additive partial construction, and one employing a hybrid architecture that fuses additive synthesis with AM-driven sideband formation.
Together, these engines produce the dark, warped timbres that define the lead line. The interplay between modulation indices, carrier–modulator relationships, and harmonic interference patterns creates shifting spectral motion and evolving overtone structures, establishing the sonic identity of the track.
The percussion was engineered from layered drum loops, transient-enhanced hits, and syncopated rhythmic structures to achieve the sense of pressure and acceleration characteristic of Hard House. The combination of custom modulation architecture and high-energy rhythmic layering shapes the intensity and forward momentum of the piece.

My name is Joseph (Joey) Kim, and I’m an electronic music producer
and DJ passionate about crafting immersive soundscapes and live DJ sets.
I create original music using Ableton Live and Reaktor 6, blending elements of house, techno, and experimental electronic styles. DJing was my first introduction to music, and it continues to fuel my creativity both technically and emotionally. Through mixing and production, I aim to connect energy, people, and storytelling in sound. As I continue to grow as an artist, I hope to expand my understanding of music production, performance, and the industry that brings it all to life.
