Ableton,Reaktor & DJing

My name is Joseph (Joey) Kim, and I’m an electronic music producer
and DJ passionate about crafting immersive soundscapes and live DJ sets.
I create original music using Ableton Live and Reaktor 6, blending elements of house, techno, and experimental electronic styles. DJing was my first introduction to music, and it continues to fuel my creativity both technically and emotionally. Through mixing and production, I aim to connect energy, people, and storytelling in sound. As I continue to grow as an artist, I hope to expand my understanding of music production, performance, and the industry that brings it all to life.

Patch No. 01

Untitled” is one of my proudest works, a track built from five custom-designed synthesizers that interact and respond to each other in one track. The track blends melodic techno elements with subtle tech-house inspired rhythmic structures.

These are the synthesizer techniques that I included -

Additive – layered harmonic construction
Subtractive – shaping tone through dynamic filtering
Amplitude Modulation (AM) – creating shifting timbral motion
Ring Modulation (RM) – generating metallic resonance and instability
Frequency Modulation (FM) – producing harmonically rich, evolving textures

This piece reflects my direction as a sound designer, implementing every element that I learned so far. It acted as sort of a challenge for me to include almost everything I learned during my journey into one track, a one stop shop to showcase my abilities as a producer. I love the art of electronic music and how every sound is born through in-depth experimentation, constant tinkering, and an endless curiosity to push creative boundaries.

Patch No. 04

This track combines Hard House aggression with Witch House tonality, powered by four original sound engines—three built in Native Instruments Reaktor and one wavetable synth.

The sound design is structured around:
Additive Synth Layer – building harmonic density
Subtractive Main Synth – shaping the core melodic line
Modified Additive Engine – introducing unstable, shifting overtones
Wavetable Element – adding spectral movement and digital texture

These layers interact to form a cohesive system rather than functioning as isolated synths.

To support the intensity of the lead sound, I constructed the rhythm using layered drum loops, transient-shaped samples, and a kick structure that doubles during the drop—creating a high-pressure, high-impact moments.

I was inspired by artists like Main Phase and Interplanetary Criminal to create a track using multiple synths that intertwine with each other. It gave me the chance to really experiment with MIDI patterns to create a busy track. I also utilized a variety of stock Ableton plugins and effects to create different layerings, allowing me to practice how to fill my music up with various sounds and synths.

Patch No. 02

This track draws inspiration from Tech House and Anyma, and is driven by three Serum 2 patches. This is a remix of a song that I thought would be a great sample for a melodic techno/ tech house track. These patches generate the warped, gritty textures that define the melodic line.

The percussive layer was crafted using multiple drum loops, transient-shaped hits, and rhythmic patterns to build the momentum typical of Tech House. Doubling the kick in key moments further amplifies the track’s impact, creating a dense, high-energy sound.

This piece highlights my passion to reshape EDM today, creating tracks that a widespread audience can enjoy. This project specifically was to showcase my ability to create tracks that can be played by top DJs around the world.

Patch No. 03

This track is inspired by Hard House and the production style of Kettama, and is built around three custom-designed sound patches developed in Reaktor 6. While all three patches are amplitude modulation, each synthesizer implements the technique through a different synthesis framework—one using a strict AM techniques, one generating harmonics through additive partial construction, and one employing a hybrid architecture that fuses additive synthesis with AM-driven formation.

Together, these patches produce the dark, warped synths that define the lead line. The interplay between modulation, MIDI patterns, and harmonic interference patterns creates a industrial sounding track.

I created this track because the genre and techniques utilized to create hard house allowed me to experiment more in my sound design and create something unique from other sounds. Overall, this track inspired me to create sounds that I want and encouraged me to fully experiment with creating music for me, which pushes me closer to finding my sound.
